The Lunar New Year is the most important traditional festival of the Chinese nation. For Chinese living overseas, it is not only a moment to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, but an emotional anchor — reliving the taste of the New Year through familiar culture and familiar flavours, far from home.

Recently, the 8th Jiangsu Spring Festival Gala, hosted by the Jiangsu Chinese Association of Canada, was grandly held in a festive atmosphere. Jiangsu natives and Chinese friends from across Canada gathered for splendid song-and-dance performances, cultural programs and interactive exchange to welcome the Lunar New Year together.

And at such a reunion, a glass of hometown wine often best awakens the New Year in memory. Sinocan Supply Inc. joined hands with Yanghe to generously sponsor this Jiangsu gala, adding a mellow fragrance from home to the celebration. As a famous Chinese baijiu brand originating in Suqian, Jiangsu, Yanghe boasts a long brewing history and profound cultural heritage. For many overseas wanderers from Jiangsu, raising a glass of Yanghe is not just tasting a good wine — it feels like a warm reunion with home during the festival.

On the reunion dinner table, wine is often what carries feeling best. It connects memories of New Year’s Eve dinners, the laughter of gathering with family and friends, and carries longing and blessings for home. As familiar hometown voices intertwined with cheerful performances, a glass of wine from home made this Lunar New Year feel especially warm.

Over the years, the Jiangsu Spring Festival Gala has become a major cultural event for Vancouver’s Jiangsu overseas-Chinese community — a platform for celebrating the festival together and a channel for passing down Chinese traditional culture overseas. Yanghe, a fine wine from Jiangsu, shares the same spirit of cultural exchange in its work to carry forward and promote baijiu culture overseas. Familiar wine aroma and familiar hometown voices wove a warm portrait of an overseas Lunar New Year amid laughter.

As Yanghe’s key partner in Canada, Sinocan Supply Inc. has long worked to advance Chinese baijiu culture overseas. Through cultural events, tastings and exchanges, Sinocan Supply Inc. hopes more overseas Chinese can drink familiar Chinese flavours at important festivals, and more local friends can learn the cultural stories Chinese baijiu carries — making Chinese baijiu a bridge between home and the world, so more people can raise a glass of Chinese New Year flavour at reunion moments during the overseas festival.

For many Chinese who have lived in Canada for years, celebrating the New Year overseas may not be as lively as back home — but with hometown people and hometown flavours, the New Year is still there.

A glass of Yanghe — to home, and to faraway places.
